Course Overview

This programme aims to provide students with both high-level knowledge related to how business organisations function and the factors which impact upon the success of an enterprise. It enables students to develop a critical understanding of the key competences involved in successful business management.

    Semester 1

    Business Information Systems

    This module examines the latest theories, technologies and applications used to support the modern business environment. Key areas such as the different types of Business Information Systems and how they are used for improving business performance will be analysed. Big data, data analytics and business models and their application in practice for the future working environment provide a key focus of this module.

    Managerial Finance

    This module aims to develop the knowledge and skills expected of a financial manager in relation to financing and investing. The student will develop competencies in evaluating sources of finance and internal risk management techniques from a managerial finance perspective.

    Company Law and Regulatory Environment

    The module builds on the basic principles of company law and the role of the regulatory environment and the manner in which company law is regulated, administered and enforced in practice. Contemporary developments in company law and the regulatory environment will be investigated from a practical perspective.

    Semester 2

    Corporate Reporting

    This module is a senior intermediate financial accounting module incorporating individual entity and group accounting, senior intermediate accounting topics, analysis of accounting information, and business ethics. The analysis and interpretation of financial statements situated in the regulatory structure of the accounting profession will be developed and applied.

    Applied Practice 3 – Applied Human Resource Management

    The purpose of this module is to facilitate the students in developing a critical view of Human Resource Management (HRM) in the context of modern society and management practice across industrial, commercial and service organisations. The module explores the changing nature of work, working lives and the employment relationship and evaluates the contribution of Human Resource Management and its practices to organisational
    effectiveness. The module will be applied to the candidates workplace and for those candidates that are not currently in employment, they will be supported with a live case study.

    Semester 3

    Business Modelling and Enterprise

    This module aims to develop the students’ business modelling and entrepreneurial skills to support effective startup and enterprise development. A key focus of the module will be on an enterprise’s capacity to adapt to its competitive environment and to identify opportunities for improvement which may lead to competitive advantage(s). It will also introduce the student to current practices underpinning organisational learning, which
    will enable an enterprise’s idea generation through effective resource management. In addition, the student will be enabled to critically analyse the mechanisms and supports available to potential entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. This module will provide the student with the specialised knowledge, skills and competences required to manage and scale a business.

  • This programme will be delivered in a blended Format. Lectures will take place predominantly online with selected Saturday’s per semester taking place at TUS Athlone Campus. Attendance at these days is mandatory.

  • Each 10-credit module normally equates to approximately 200 total learning hours. Total learning hours include the time spent in class, such as lectures, tutorials, and practical elements, as well as time spent working independently outside of college.

    The balance between these varies by discipline and level of study, and learners should be aware that workload will increase at particular times, especially when assignments are due.

  • The programme is assessed through a combination of continuous assessments, project work and examinations.

  • This programme is funded under the Part Time Fee Scheme (SUSI) for Selected Undergraduate Programmes.
