Course Overview

The aim of this programme is to equip students with a comprehensive foundation in business principles while simultaneously enhancing their English language proficiency. The programme is a collaboration between the Technological University of the Shannon and the University of Burgos under the RUN-EU alliance. Designed for non-native English speakers, this degree integrates language acquisition with business studies, ensuring graduates are equipped to effectively communicate, collaborate, and lead in global business environments. Business English is relevant across nearly all professions and is essential for effective communication and collaboration in a wide range of professional settings. Business English involves the use of the language for specific and practical purposes, enabling communication in diverse workplace environments. As such, the skills developed through Business English are highly transferable across almost all professional fields.

Graduates will develop key competencies in areas such as management, marketing, finance, and cross-cultural communication, while developing English language acquisition, preparing them for roles in diverse, multinational organisations or further academic pursuits in business. This programme will be delivered online and flexibly through an innovative and interactive online learning environment. It utilises highly participatory learning and teaching pedagogies. The flexibility and agility of this
programme will allow learners to specialise in a pathway most suited to their skills, career aspirations, and employer needs while undertaking core modules that will give them the necessary skills and competencies which are required in a variety of business and leadership roles, with proficient English language skills at its core.

  • Year 1 

    Fundamentals of English 1 (B2.1 Intermediate User) 

    This is the first of three progressive modules designed to guide students from an intermediate level to upper-intermediate proficiency. Aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), this module serves as a reinforcement of language skills at the outset of the programme, ensuring that all students consolidate and further develop their B2/IELTS 6.0-level competencies. It is designed to facilitate steady progress by strengthening foundational skills, preparing students to advance to higher levels of proficiency and ultimately become independent users of English. Students will enhance their ability to comprehend the main points of complex communications across a range of familiar, professional, and technical topics. Through a variety of activities, they will practice listening, speaking, reading, writing, and mediation skills in order to achieve greater fluency and confidence in real-life scenarios.

    Uses of English in Europe

    This module introduces students to the English language in use, particularly in the European context, by covering aspects of English language evolution, history of the British Isles, cultural and literary relevant outputs and societal characteristics. Also, it addresses the use of English globally as well as in particular settings and contexts such as the workplace, the sciences and education, and the media.
    On completion of the module, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of English and its use as a lingua franca, as well as its practical applications in multiple settings of contemporary societies.

    Fundamentals of Business Operations 

    This module provides an introduction to the key functions of business operations. It is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of how businesses operate, focusing on the main functional areas that contribute to organisational success. Topics will cover an overview of business operations and the interplay between key areas such as finance, marketing, human resources, operations management, and supply chain. By
    the end of this module, students will have gained foundational knowledge of the complexities and challenges involved in managing a business effectively and efficiently. There will be a specific focus on the appropriate use of the English language through its application to the area of business operations and operational scenarios within the business domain. Appropriate language use in English is a key component of the module indicative
    syllabus.

    Introduction to Workplace Finance 

    This module offers students a comprehensive understanding of the foundational concepts and tools in finance. It is designed to introduce key aspects of financial management, investment analysis, risk management, and capital markets. The focus will be on practical knowledge and its application in real-world business scenarios, without extensive overlap with modules that cover budgeting, forecasting, and operational financial decision making
    in depth. There will be specific focus on English language acquisition through its application to the area of finance and financial scenarios within the business domain. English language acquisition is a key component of the module indicative syllabus.

    Intercultural Communication 

    This module introduces students to the use of the English language in intercultural settings, presents the phenomenon of English as a global language, delves into the complexity of this phenomenon, and its applications in different settings. Also, it addresses the many contexts and situations English is used for intercultural communication. Added to that, practical study cases and cultural products are presented and analysed. Real-life situations are provided for problem solving. On completion of the module students will develop a comprehensive understanding of intercultural communication and the appropriate uses of English in intercultural settings.

    Applied Practice 1 Personal and Professional Context

    This module is designed to assist students with preparation for professional and personal work-based development and well-being. There will be a particular emphasis on career, personal development and well-being in the
    modern workplace.

    Year 2

    Fundamentals of English 2 (B2.2 upper intermediate user)

    This module is designed for learners at the B2.1 level (upper intermediate) and focuses on developing a solid foundation of the five key language skills contemplated in the CEFR: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and mediation. The course aims to equip participants with the ability to understand and produce clear, detailed text on a range of familiar, professional and business-related topics. It emphasises effective communication in both formal and informal settings with a degree of fluency and spontaneity improving fluency, grammatical accuracy, and vocabulary range, particularly in business context.

    Uses of English as a Global Language 

    This module focuses on the dynamic and ever-living role of English as a global language and its function within the world’s diverse English- speaking communities from a theoretical and practical point of view, including its use in international business contexts.
    It examines the various factors such as linguistic, cultural and social interactions that have influenced its spread. Furthermore, students will learn the divers varieties of English and their intersections with other language. Finally, students will reflect on the ethical use of language, including the role of English in globalisation, business communication, cultural preservation and language imperialism.
    This promotes student reflection on their own experiences of English and how they can connect with global English-speaking communities, especially in professional and business environments.

    Global Business Environment 

    The aim of this module is to develop a student’s understanding of the global business environment, the economic and legal factors impacting organisations, and how strategic development methodologies can help mitigate risks and capitalise on opportunities as a result of changes in economic conditions.

    A key element of this module is the acquisition and application of English language skills. There will be specific focus on English language acquisition through its application to the area of general business skills and global business scenarios within the business domain. English language acquisition is a key component of the module’s indicative syllabus. Students will use English as a tool to manage the challenges of the global business
    environment.

    Fundamentals of Management Accounting

    The learner will study management accounting techniques, used to provide managers with information to assist with planning, controlling and decision making. The students will develop a competency for preparing budgets and appraising measurement and control techniques in management accounting.

    There will be specific focus on English language acquisition through its application to the area of management accounting skills and financial scenarios within the business domain. English language acquisition is a key component of the module indicative syllabus and students will enhance their ability to use precise accounting terminology and communicate financial concepts effectively in English.

    Oral and Written Skills for Professional Communication 
    This module focuses on practicing oral and written communications skills in English-speaking business environments. The units will equip participants with skills to communicate effectively and professionally in both spoken and written forms across a range of business scenarios and a variety of audiences, i.e. job interviews, presentations, meetings, negotiations, CV drafting, business correspondence and writing for digital platforms among others. On completion of the module, participants will be able to navigate oral and written interactions in multicultural settings using appropriate tone, register, and etiquette to communicate effectively and avoid misunderstandings.
    Applied Practice 2 Organisational Alignment
    This module affords students the opportunity to implement the core work practice skills to compliment the other taught modules. Students will be required to make a business case proposal and it will form the basis of a work based learning project that will demonstrate the ability to engage as a skilled practitioner in their discipline. The aim of the module is to encourage learners to develop integrative learning, independent thought and critical reflection skills as they bring together a range of concepts, theories, frameworks and practices. For candidates that are currently not working, previous experience can be drawn upon with support from desk based case studies.
    Year 3
    Fundamentals of English 3 (C1 advanced user)
    This module is designed to equip the students with the skills needed to confidently use English at a C1 (CEFR) level, focusing on the five core skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Mediation. Through a combination of interactive activities and advanced language exercises, students will develop the ability to navigate both everyday and professional situations with ease. The course aims at fluency and flexibility in language use and allows students to express themselves clearly, understand complex written and spoken content, and engage in nuanced discussions. This C1 level will enable students to participate confidently in academic, professional, and social contexts where English is the medium of interaction.
    Contemporary English Speaking Cultures and Identities in Transition
    contemporary cultures and societies in English-speaking communities around the world. It focuses on the socio-cultural aspects, values, and practices of countries and regions where English is the official language. Through the study of English-speaking cultures in international contexts, students will explore the intersections between different identities and local traditions.
    In addition, topics such as social and ethnic diversity, politics, history, media, culture and art of these communities will be addressed. Students will reflect on the role of English-speaking communities in contemporary global debates and how their cultural influence is reflected in phenomena such as film, music, fashion, and social media.
    Corporate Governance and Sustainability
    students to the topic of Corporate Governance and Sustainability by covering aspects of moral philosophy, ethics in business, sustainable development, corporate social responsibility and environmental social governance.
    On completion of the module, students will develop an understanding of how ethical and sustainable practices can be utilised as a source of competitive advantage in business. There will be specific focus on English language acquisition through its application to the area of corporate governance and sustainability in a global context and its use in global business scenarios within the business domain. English language acquisition is a key component of the module indicative syllabus.
    ICT, Digital Skills and AI for Professionals
    provides an introduction to key concepts in ICT, digital skills, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is designed for students who wish to develop practical digital skills and gain an understanding of the foundational principles of AI, focusing on its applications in the modern world. Topics covered include digital literacy, data management, basic programming, AI techniques, and the ethical considerations surrounding emerging technologies. The ICT, Digital Skills and AI for Professionals module was designed using Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle as the core pedagogical framework. This framework is integrated into the Teaching and Learning Strategy of the overall programme and supports effective learning by guiding students through the four stages of experiential learning:
    1. Concrete Experience – learners engage in practical, real-world tasks related to ICT and AI.
    2. Reflective Observation – they reflect on these experiences during and after synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.
    3. Abstract Conceptualisation – they derive insights, concepts, or theories from their reflections and lectures.
    4. Active Experimentation – they apply these insights through assessments, performance evaluations, and digital skill demonstrations.
    This approach supports the development of critical digital competencies, AI literacy, and professional application of technology, especially for learners in international, multilingual business contexts. There will be specific focus on English language acquisition through its application to the area of ICT, AI and digital skills and their use in real-world scenarios within the business domain. English language acquisition is a key component of the module indicative syllabus.
    Applied Practice 3 – Applied HRM in English-Speaking Contexts
    The purpose of this module is to facilitate the students in developing a critical view of Human Resource Management (HRM) in the context of modern society, the English language and management practice across industrial, commercial and service organisations. The module explores the changing nature of work, working lives and the employment relationship and evaluates the contribution of Human Resource Management and its practices to organisational effectiveness in English-speaking contexts. There will be specific focus on English language acquisition through its application to the area of applied human resource management within the business domain. English language acquisition is a key component of the module indicative syllabus.
    Capstone Project
    This module affords students the opportunity to implement the core skills learnt in the taught modules. Students will be required to make a proposal and it will form the basis of an applied project that will demonstrate the ability to engage as a skilled practitioner in their discipline. The aim of the module is to encourage learners to develop integrative learning, independent thought and critical reflection skills as they bring together a range of
    concepts, theories, frameworks and practices. They will also be expected to practice their competences developed within other modules. The capstone project will be a supervised module, with members of the lecturing team from both TUS and UBU involved in its delivery and assessment. Linguistic and technical content of the project is a key component and Professional English proficiency will be equally weighted with acquired business
    acumen in the final grading process.

  • This programme will be delivered online though our virtual learning environment.

  • Each 10-credit module normally equates to approximately 200 total learning hours. Total learning hours include the time spent in class, such as lectures, tutorials, and practical elements, as well as time spent working independently outside of college.

    The balance between these varies by discipline and level of study, and learners should be aware that workload will increase at particular times, especially when assignments are due.
