Accepting a CAO Offer

How to Accept an Offer of a place in First Year

First-year offers are issued through the CAO in a series of rounds beginning in July. If places offered in an earlier round are not taken up, additional offers are made in later rounds. Most first-year offers are released in Round 1 in August, following the publication of the Irish Leaving Certificate results. Being away from home or on holiday will not affect your application, as CAO offers can be viewed and accepted online at www.cao.ie. However, meeting deadlines is critical. If you will be away from your usual postal address and are unsure of internet access, you should authorise someone you trust to open your mail and respond on your behalf.

If you do not accept your offer before the notified deadline the offer will lapse. If you try to accept a CAO offer online after the deadline has expired, you will be unable to do so. If you mail your acceptance and it reaches CAO after the deadline, they will notify you that you have missed the deadline and refer you to the college. Colleges are under no obligation to consider applicants whose response arrives after the deadline. Usually there is a waiting list for each course and, when an acceptance does not arrive on time, the place may already have been offered to someone on that list. In this case it will no longer be available to the original offeree.

That being said, we may, at our own absolute discretion, accept late responses. It may be easier to be flexible about late responses on rounds A and Zero before round 1. From round 1 onward and particularly for certain high demand courses that have a very limited intake. It may not be possible to accommodate late responses.

If you miss a deadline, contact the Admissions Office immediately. Please note that missing an acceptance deadline can mean losing your college place.

Frequently Asked CAO Questions

You can accept your offer online at www.cao.ie after which you will receive an acknowledgement e-mail from the CAO.

Congratulations on your offer of a place at TUS Athlone! Applicants who accept a place in round 1 at TUS will receive an email on 5th September with registration information and the TUS Starter Pack, which includes information on your induction and all student support services. Applicants who accept offers in subsequent CAO rounds will receive an email within a few working days.

Induction is the first step in settling into college life so it’s important to attend where you can meet your classmates, lecturers and you will be shown how to access facilities and learn about supports available to you. In the meantime, you can browse our website to find lots of helpful information for new undergraduate students.

If you picked both Level 8 and Level 6/7 choices on your CAO application form, then you may receive two offers. You can only accept one of these offers.

We recommend you choose the programme you have a genuine interest in studying. Most Level 6 and Level 7 programmes can lead you to the exact same Level 8 honours degree, at the same length of time, but provide greater flexibility to change paths along the way. If you are unsure of the pathway for a programme you have been offered, please contact us on admissions.athlone@tus.ie.

If a place on a higher preference course becomes available in a later round, and if you are entitled to this place, you may receive an offer which you can choose to accept or ignore. Accepting an offer now will not prevent you from receiving an offer of a higher preference course in subsequent offer rounds. Accepting the new offer will automatically cancel the previous acceptance.

If a course does not fill on Round 1, it may go to Round 2 or subsequent rounds. Offers will be issued to those who have applied for the course and are most eligible.

If you don’t receive an offer in the first round, you may still receive an offer in later offer rounds. Contact our team to discuss your options email admissions.midlands@tus.ie. You can also check out the programmes where there are Available Places remaining. Applications are made through the CAO on via www.cao.ie. Other options include further education, taking a year out and reapplying to CAO, repeating the Leaving Certificate, apprenticeships, or studying abroad.

If you have simply changed your mind about going to college, for example if you have decided, instead, to repeat the Leaving Certificate, attend a PLC course, travel, or to take up a job, then you should notify the college that you do not, after all, plan to attend. This will enable the college to offer that place to someone else on the waiting list.

The Available Places facility will open on Thursday, 28th August 2025 at 12pm. If a new course becomes available, or if there are still places left on an existing course, it may be offered for application through Available Places. A full list of TUS courses with available places will be published on the Available Places webpage.

If you do not receive an offer, or are not satisfied with the offer you receive, you will have the opportunity to apply for another course through the Available Places facility on the CAO website.

The Available Places facility shows all courses at third-level institutions that still have vacancies. Applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements may apply, but applying does not guarantee an offer.

In some cases, applicants may be unable to accept their offer due to circumstances beyond their control. In such situations, it may be possible to request a Deferral (a postponement of study until the following year). Applicants seeking a deferral should not accept their offer through the CAO. Instead, they must contact the Admissions Office immediately for guidance on how to apply for a CAO Deferral. Please note that the number of deferrals is limited, and submitting a request does not guarantee approval.  Please e-mail admissions.midlands@tus.ie

Our registration team will contact all applicants who have accepted their CAO offer when the 2025/2026 academic system is open for registration on 5th September. The email will include all the links and information needed to register.

If you have not received the email with the details to register by the dates listed above, please contact our admissions team admissions.midlands@tus.ie

If you have applied for a student support grant, you should inform the grant authority which course you have accepted.  This will enable them to complete the processing of your grant application. Visit the SUSI website for more information.

You can only access your timetable once you have completed online student registration in early September.  You can view the Timetable App on the My Apps page in your account
