Course Overview

This Transport Safety Management module provides a comprehensive understanding of the principles, practices, and strategies involved in ensuring safety within the transportation sector. This module encompasses various modes of transportation, including road, air, rail, maritime, and public transit.
The aim of this module is to address the need to provide learners with Safety and Environmental awareness and knowledge when dealing with vehicle drivers, vehicles, warehousing and vehicle maintenance facilities, along with the Regulatory Compliance, Ethics and Legal Requirements associated with these Safety Practices.

  • Transport Safety Management (10 ECTS)

    Module content includes;

    • Fundamentals of Safety Management: Introduces the basic concepts and principles of safety management systems (SMS) within the transportation context. Topics include hazard identification, load security, risk assessment, safety culture, and regulatory frameworks.
    • Safety Regulations and Compliance: Examines national and international regulations governing transportation safety, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. for aviation safety, International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations for maritime safety, and regulations for road and rail transportation.
    • Safety Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Provides techniques and methodologies for conducting safety risk assessments within transportation operations. Covers risk identification, analysis, evaluation, and mitigation strategies to reduce or eliminate potential hazards.
    • Emergency Response and Crisis Management: Explores strategies for managing emergencies and crises within transportation systems, including response planning, coordination with emergency services, communication protocols, and post-incident analysis for continuous improvement.
    • Human Factors in Transportation Safety: Addresses the role of human factors in transportation accidents and incidents. Topics include human error, fatigue management, crew resource management (CRM), and human centered design principles for enhancing safety.
    • Technology and Innovation in Safety: Discusses the role of technology and innovation in improving transportation safety. Covers advancements such as collision avoidance systems, predictive maintenance technologies, autonomous vehicles, and safety-enhancing infrastructure.
    • Safety Performance Monitoring and Evaluation: Focusses on methods for monitoring safety performance.
  • Normally a level 6 in a cognitive area or suitable transport industry experience gained while working in the transport industry which could be verified through RPL. Please provide details of your connection to the transport industry on the Further Information section of the registration form.

    Once you have submitted your online application you will then receive an email acknowledgement with further instructions on RPL.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a minimum score of 5.5 in an IELTS exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a minimum of 6.0 is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

  • Delivery

    The programme will run for 12 weeks in an online learning format, 1 evening per week, 2 hours per evening as follows;

    Tuesdays from 7pm to 9pm

    All online sessions will be recorded.

    Classes will commence on Tuesday 19th January 2027.

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

  • Continuous assessment (100% online).

    Assessment methods may include:

    • Written assignments analysing safety regulations and case studies.
    • Group projects develop safety management plans for specific transportation scenarios.
    • Presentations demonstrate understanding of safety risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
    • Examinations assessed knowledge of safety management principles and practices.
