The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has officially launched two new publications in its Compendia series, showcasing best practice in teaching, learning and assessment across higher education.

The launch event, hosted on the Athlone Campusand streamed online, unveiled:

  • Compendium of Embedding Education for Sustainable Development in Teaching, Learning and Assessment
  • Compendium of Approaches to Internationalisation of the Home Curriculum

The event was formally opened by Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of TUS, who highlighted the significance of these compendia in advancing sustainability and internationalisation within higher education.

Keynote speaker Professor Georgina Gough, the UK’s first female Professor of Education for Sustainable Development, shared inspiring insights into the transformative role of education in tackling global sustainability challenges.

Further contributions came from Dr Mark Kelly, Policy Advisor on Education for Sustainable Development with the Higher Education Authority’s National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, and Duncan Stewart, Architect, Environmentalist and Broadcaster, who closed the event with an impassioned call for collective action in building a sustainable future.

The launch also highlighted TUS case studies featured within the compendia, providing practical examples of innovative approaches to both ESD and internationalisation in teaching and learning.

Following the launch, the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation and Development hosted an interactive Education for Sustainable Development workshop, led by Professor Gough. The session, open to all staff, encouraged participants to explore accessible ways of embedding sustainability principles into their teaching practice, regardless of discipline or prior experience.

Congratulations are extended to all those involved in developing the compendia, and in particular to the editorial team: Dr Noëlle O’Connor, Eimear Kelly, Seán Connell, Nicola Ryan and Catherine O’Donoghue

The publications reflect TUS’s ongoing commitment to embedding sustainability and internationalisation across all aspects of teaching, learning and assessment
