Department of Polymer and Mechanical
You know that Mechanical and Polymer Engineering is a growth industry with excellent employment prospects and a growing need for graduates. You know that renewable energy is one of the biggest engineering challenges of our time.
The Department of Polymer and Mechanical at TUS Athlone Campus offers a range of certificates and degrees designed to meet these needs.
We were pioneers in polymer education in Ireland, and have contributed to the development of many major polymer technology industries in the Midlands, such as Athlone Extrusions, making our student placements truly valuable.
We offer specialised degrees in mechanical and polymer engineering and another in mechanical engineering and renewable energy. We are the only technological university in Ireland accredited to award PhD qualifications in polymer engineering.
You will use the latest equipment and technology, including an industrial 3D printer, in our purpose-built, state-of-the-art Engineering and Technology building.
Many of our courses are fully accredited by Engineers Ireland and our honours degrees are recognised for entry into Postgraduate Diploma of Education programmes.

Department of Technology Education
Ireland continues to lead in innovation, design, and engineering, with education playing a central role in shaping the next generation of thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers. Technology Education is at the heart of this landscape, empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and values needed to engage with an increasingly complex and technological world.
The Department of Technology Education at TUS Midlands is a national leader in Design and Technology Teacher Education, offering a dynamic range of programmes accredited by the Teaching Council of Ireland. Our degree pathways currently include:
- B.Ed in Technology, Engineering and Graphics Education
- B.Ed in Technology and Home Economics Education
- Masters in Technology Education
- Ph.D in Design and Technology Education
Across these programmes, we develop highly skilled, reflective graduates who are equipped to become leaders in their respective fields; whether in education, design, or engineering, through a strong emphasis on professional competence, critical thinking, and innovation.
Our research-active faculty are central to the department’s strength and impact. Through the Technology Education Research Group (TERG) and the European Teacher Academy (Social Innovation and Democratic Education), we ensure that our teaching is deeply research-informed, continuously evolving to reflect best practice and emerging insights in education and technology.
Strong partnerships underpin our work. Through close collaboration with schools, national policy makers, European partners and with our teacher education partners in DCU, we actively contribute to the ongoing development of Technology Education in Ireland and further afield.
