Foundations For Success

Course Overview

This 6-week preparatory programme is designed for adult learners who want to enhance their digital literacy skills, build confidence, and prepare for new opportunities in education, training, or employment.

Through small, supportive group sessions, participants will develop essential computer skills, explore academic and career pathways, and connect with others in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Foundations for Success course is partly funded and delivered through the ReSHAPE project, which is supported by the EU Just Transition Fund.

The course is run in collaboration with the Department of Business and Management and the Access Service in TUS Athlone campus, with support from community organisations across the Midlands.

Key highlights:

· Build basic computer skills with hands-on sessions (email, internet, MS Office, etc.)

· Explore opportunities in education and employment.

· Grow your confidence through interactive, small-group learning

· Take part in workshops on personal development

· Meet new people and connect with support services

· Receive a certificate of completion and guidance on your next steps

Entry Requirements

Adults meeting the mature student entry criteria for university are eligible to apply. This is a non-accredited course, and participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Schedule for 6 Weeks:

Time: 10am-1pm
Location: TUS Athlone Campus

Week 1 – Welcome (1h) & IT set up & Getting Started with Computers (2hrs)

Week 2 – Exploring Interests & Aspirations (1h) & Computer session: Files, Cloud storage, Email & Online Safety

Week 3 – Building Confidence & Communication Skills (1h) & Computer session: Microsoft Word (2hrs)

Week 4 – Teamwork & Problem-Solving (1h) & Computer session: Microsoft Excel (2hrs)

Week 5 – Creativity, Innovation & Sustainable Careers (1h) & Computer session: Microsoft PowerPoint (2hrs)

Week 6 – Planning Next Steps – Training, Work or Volunteering (1h) & Computer session: Digital skills recap (2hrs)

Participants who complete the programme will have a clearer understanding of the alternative pathways to higher education, available support services, and potential career opportunities in sustainable sectors. This course acts as a stepping stone for mature students considering university studies or further professional development.
