The aim of the Certificate in Decarbonisation Solutions for the Built Environment programme is to up-skill building professionals to develop knowledge and skills that allow them to analyse, design, and develop approaches and strategies to address decarbonisation of the built environment by analysing carbon capture, biodiversity, renewables and battery storage and provide solutions which can influence future policy goals.
Entry Requirements;
An honours degree (level 8) in a cognate (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.) discipline or approved equivalent qualification
or
A level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.,) or approved equivalent qualification, with 2-year relevant work experience.
or
Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) – Assessment

HCI Pillar 3 Funding
Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the HCI Pillar 3 funding, as set out by the HEA. We would encourage you to read the criteria prior to making an application, to ensure you are eligible to apply. Details can be found HERE
ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.
Decarbonisation Strategies and Options in the Built Environment (10 credits)
• Policy on energy and carbon impacts and the regulatory environment
• Determine strategies for climate change mitigation and addressing SDGs
• Understand the significance of embodied carbon, carbon capture and sequestration and bio diversity within the built environment
• Determine bio-diverse approaches and strategies to achieve carbon reductions
• Investigate decarbonisation strategies and methods that can influence future policy goals
Decarbonisation Analysis & Solutions in the Built Environment (10 credits)
• Determine the electric grid and battery storage opportunities
• Analyse RES methodologies to decarbonise the built environment
• Assess renewable strategies and solutions (RES, wind, PV, geothermal, district heating)
• Analyse district heating and cooling in an urban context
• Determine community needs and decarbonisation opportunities
2 evening online lectures (2hrs per lecture)
Full day practical workshops and site visits on Fridays or Saturdays(TBC)
Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.
Assessment will be through a range of continuous assessments, which will involve:
• Case studies,
• Online Quizzes
• Project reports
Certificate in Decarbonisation Solutions for the Built Environment (SPA L9, 20 ECTS)
€2,800. HCI Pillar 3 Funding – Student pays €560.
Application Deadline: 11th December 2024. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis, prioritizing unemployed and returning applicants. Course will be closed once the maximum number of applicants is reached. Courses run subject to viable numbers.
