Course Overview

The aim of the Certificate in Building Regulation Compliance for Traditional Buildings programme is to address the challenging roles and responsibilities associated with building

regulations for the renovation of traditional buildings (pre 1940s) and to up-skill building professionals to develop knowledge and skills that allow them to design, deliver and approve compliant traditional buildings.

Entry Requirements:
An honours degree (level 8) in a cognate (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.) discipline or approved equivalent qualification
or
A level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.,) or approved equivalent qualification, with 1-year relevant work experience.

HCI Pillar 3 Funding 

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the HCI Pillar 3 funding, as set out by the HEA. We would encourage you to read the criteria prior to making an application, to ensure you are eligible to apply. Details can be found HERE.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

     Building Defects Detection and Analysis – 5 credits

    • Digital Tools for Identifying Building Defects in Existing Buildings
    • Formatting Condition Assessment Reports for Existing Buildings
    • Introduction to Hygrothermal risk evaluation and modelling
    • U-Value calculations
    • Maintenance & Repair

    Fundamentals In BIM ISO19650 – 5 credits

    • Introduction to the ISO 19650 Series of Standards:
    • Organisational Information Requirements (OIR), Asset Information Requirements (AIR), Project Information Requirements (PIR), Exchange Information, Requirements (EIR)
    • Pre-construction activities – Production Methods and Procedures, Shared Information and Resources and Management of Asset Information
    • Responsibilities of Lead Appointed Party and BIM Execution Plans (BEP).
    • Responsibility Matrix, Appointed Parties, Information Exchange, and Master information Delivery Plan,
    • Mobilisation, Information Quality Assurance.

    Traditional Building Regulation Energy Compliance – 5 credits

    Application of Part L, J and F to traditional construction types in Ireland

    • Introduction to standard Technical Guidance Documents
    • Traditional construction types in Ireland
    • Energy upgrades in traditional building stock – theory and technical background
    • Application of alternative details for building regulation compliance to Parts L, J and F
    • Use of digital tools and software for demonstrating alternative details for traditional construction.
  • 2 hour on-line lectures – Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

    Full day face to face practical workshops and site visits on Fridays or Saturdays (TBC)

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

     

  • Assessment will be through a range of continuous assessments, which will involve:

    • Case studies,
    • Online Quizzes
    • Project reports
  • Certificate in Methods of Energy Renovation for Traditional Buildings (SPA – L8, 20 ECTS)

  • €2,500 – HCI Pillar 3 Funding – Student pays €500

  • Application Deadline: 11th August 2024. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis, prioritizing unemployed and returning applicants. Course will be closed once the maximum number of applicants is reached. Courses run subject to viable numbers.
