Course Overview

The aim of the Certificate in Building Regulation Compliance for Traditional Buildings programme is to address the challenging roles and responsibilities associated with building regulations for the renovation of traditional buildings (pre 1940s) and to up-skill building professionals to develop knowledge and skills that allow them to design, deliver and approve compliant traditional buildings.

Entry Requirements:

An honours degree (level 8) in a cognate (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.) discipline or approved equivalent qualification

or

A level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.,) or approved equivalent qualification, with 1-year relevant work experience.

or

Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

  • Traditional Building Regulation Energy Compliance – 5 credits

    Application of Technical Guidance Documents, TGDs Part L, J and F to traditional construction types in Ireland

    • Introduction to standard Technical Guidance Documents
    • Traditional construction types in Ireland
    • Energy upgrades in traditional building stock – theory and technical background
    • Application of alternative details for building regulation compliance to Parts L, J and F
    • Use of digital tools and software for demonstrating alternative details for traditional construction.

     

    Traditional Building Regulation Fabric Compliance – 5 credits

    Application of Technical Guidance Documents, TGDs Parts: A, B, D and M, to traditional construction types.

    • Introduction to relevant Building Regulations and Technical Guidance Documents
    • Introduction to the DHLGH – Guidance for Specifiers and Installers and Homeowners Maintenance Advice Series
    • Traditional construction typologies and adaptability in Ireland
    • Renovation requirements in traditional building stock – theory and technical background
    • Application of alternative details for building regulation compliance, in particular TGDs Parts A, B, D and M.
    • Use of digital tools and software for demonstrating and analysing alternative details for traditional construction

     

     

  • Evening On-line lectures –  2 hours contact weekly

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study. You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.

  • Assessment will be through a range of continuous assessments, which will involve:

    • Case studies,
    • Online Quizzes
    • Project reports
