Dr. Carmel Kealey

Dr Carmel Kealey obtained her BSc Hons Microbiology from University College Galway, MSc in Medical Genetics and Immunology from Brunel University, UK and PhD in Molecular Genetics from Trinity College Dublin. She undertook postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, USA, from 2003-2006 in the area of pharmacogenetics, specifically investigating the effect of functional enzyme polymorphisms on complex diseases such as neural tube defects. She joined Athlone Institute of Technology (now TUS) in 2008 as a full-time academic lecturer with expertise in Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Genetics and in 2021, became Head of Department. Since 2013, she has been actively involved in multidisciplinary collaborative research with both external and internal research centres, generating peer reviewed research publications and graduating a number of students at MSc and PhD. Research interests include Lipid metabolism, Natural Antimicrobials and Microbial Biofilms of human and veterinary significance.
