Dr Yvonne J Cortese has a BSc Honours in Toxicology from Athlone Institute of Technology and a PhD in Microbiology from the Technological University of the Shannon.
Dr Cortese has also been involved in diverse national/international research projects utilising her expertise in microbiology, toxicology, and method development. These projects were funded by Teleflex, Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), Science Without Borders, the European Space Agency, Horizon 2020 (BioICEP), the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Irish Research Council New Foundation Programme. These projects were focused on increasing the sustainability of polymer products, development of bio-based drug delivery systems, and in vitro method development for the MedTech industry.
Currently, Dr Cortese is a Postdoctoral Researcher in TUS. Within the Horizon Europe Buddie-Pack consortium, Dr Cortese is the lead microbiologist of the TUS team guiding development of the world’s first reusable vacuum skin pack meat tray. As part of the Enterprise Ireland supported Meat Technology Ireland industry-led research initiative, Dr Cortese is developing decontamination methods to facilitate recycling of contaminated waste. Dr Cortese is also the lead microbiologist for an Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership between TUS and Algamy Ltd focused on the development of algae-based bioplastics.
