At various stages in your academic career, you will inevitably face times when the bar is being raised in terms of your written work. Perhaps you are transitioning from second to third level, advancing in your studies, or facing into writing an assignment or dissertation for the first time? Perhaps you are a postgraduate student seeking help with preparing an article for publication or writing up your research findings or maybe you have returned to education for the first time in many years and are struggling to get started on an assignment? Or, you might simply be worried about writing or want to push your grades up by honing your writing skills and improving your approach to writing? If this sounds like you, then the Academic Writing Centre is here to help.
Who we are:
The Academic Writing Centre (AWC) in TUS is a resource dedicated to improving students’ performance and confidence in all areas of academic writing. We strive for excellence in every aspect of our engagement with students in the centre. Our Academic Writing Coordinator/Lecturer, Dr Miriam O’Connor, oversees the running of the AWC.
What we do:
We offer a range of services and supports pertaining to academic writing. These supports are available as workshops or individual tutorials. We cannot write your essay for you, but we can help with practical strategies to facilitate your work.
How we can help you:
We can help you with elements of essay writing including but not limited to, effective note-taking, critical reading, essay planning, structuring your arguments and editing skills. While we cannot write or proofread your essay for you, we can equip you with the skills you need to get the job done. We can also help with the practical formatting and IT skills elements of preparing an assignment for submission. If you are struggling to get started with an essay, or just need some guidance on systems of citation, we are here to help.
Where we are:
We are centrally located in the main canteen on the Athlone Campus, just a few steps away from the library. We have a dedicated space that is conducive to group learning, while also offering privacy for one-to-one instruction. The office of the Academic Writing Centre operates a drop-in facility at scheduled times (see Writing Skills page on Moodle for details).
