Name: Clodagh McCabe
Course: BSc (Hons) Biotechnology with Biopharmaceutical Sciences
Year Graduated: 2023
I am currently working in a medical device company in County Clare, “Beckman and Coulter”. I am working in an Immunoassay formulation department where my day to day work involves me making diluents as well as conjugates by working close with antibodies, UPLC’s and many other laboratory instruments. These are used for the production of blood tests used in hospitals to test for Vitamin D, B12, hormones etc.
Why did I choose my course: I was unsure on what I wanted to do after secondary school I knew I took a special interest in sciences. I chose this course as it explores many different sides to sciences teaching me very useful skills in which I use everyday now in the working environment.
What do you like most about your course: I loved the variety of modules within this course, not only was it hands on in the labs but it explored many different aspects of pharmaceuticals and the human body systems. I also found having a smaller class size helped me make lifetime friends and having a close relationship with lecturers made it easier asking questions throughout the course
How has your degree helped you in your career: Now that I’m working full time and putting what I had learnt over the past four years to use I have a greater understanding of the science industry, from the quality side of things to the understanding of manufacturing and the chemical reactions that go behind it. My 6 month work placement in third year gave me an insight into the industry and also gave me working experience in which many companies look for when hiring.
Apart from your course what did you like most about TUS? I loved the atmosphere in TUS including the smaller class sizes and how the support from lecturers was always available.
