What is a Masterclass?
A masterclass is a comprehensive and in-depth educational experience led by an expert in a specific field or topic. It often involves
a series of pre-recorded or live video sessions, covering a wide range of concepts, strategies, and techniques.
Masterclasses are designed to provide participants with a deep understanding and practical knowledge of the subject matter.

Masterclass Theme: Universal Design for Learning on Thursday 25th April 2024
The speakers for this Masterclass are:
Dr Patricia McCarthy
Associate Research Fellow, Inclusion in Education and Society, Trinity College Dublin
Dr Patricia McCarthy graduated with a PhD from Trinity College Dublin in 2014. Her thesis focused on the educational experiences and transition opportunities of vision impaired/blind young people. Patricia is a Visiting Research Fellow in the School of Education, TCD where she coordinates the PME Sociology of Education module, contributes to the Disability Rights module TCPID, is a Master thesis supervisor and an active member of the research community.
A key component of her research focuses on UD(L), inclusion and participation of marginalised groups; Patricia’s ontological position as a disabled researcher has been instrumental in the development of her research and recent publications. She is the current Co-Chair of the Equality Committee – Staff Disability Working Group, TCD, Co-Convenor of the TCD Disabled Staff & Postgrad Forum, a member of National Disability Postgraduate Advisory Committee (NDPAC), member of Electoral Commission Research Advisory Group and member of the NCSE Consultative Forum.
Mairead McCann
Lecturer, Atlantic Technological University
Mairead McCann is a Lecturer based in the Department of Business in ATU. She teaches modules in Communication, People Management and Leadership, with an interest in Problem-based Learning and UDL and undertakes action research in these areas. She is a member of CRISP, the Strategic Research Group based in the School of Business & Social Sciences and is currently a PhD candidate in the Queen’s University of Belfast in the School of Arts, English & Languages, with a research project titled: Style Shaping Substance: A Discourse Analysis of Female Politicians’ Self and Media Representation in Northern Ireland.
She is an elected member of the Academic Council, and a member of the Learning Teaching Assessment sub committee and the Planning and Co-ordination sub committee.
Dr Lisa Padden
Programme Manager – University for All & Interim Disability Support Manager, University College Dublin
‘Building Communities through Professional Development: Universal Design Digital Badges’
Dr Lisa Padden is Programme Manager for UCD’s University for All initiative – a whole institution approach to embedding access and inclusion. Lisa and her team work closely with AHEAD on the development and delivery of the National Forum Digital Badges in Universal Design for Teaching and Learning and Universal Design Beyond the Classroom.

Dr. Catherine Cronin
Critical (and continually evolving) digital literacies
Catherine Cronin is an independent scholar focused on critical and social justice approaches in digital, open and higher education. She worked as digital and open education lead in the National Forum (2018-2021) and recently co-edited the open access book Higher Education for Good: Teaching and Learning Futures.
Brian Mulligan
Brian is an education innovation consultant, highly experienced in the strategic application of learning technologies. He is the founder of the Irish Learning Technology Association (ILTA), and he specialises in a range of areas including e-learning, online distance learning, strategy development, synchronous online teaching, PC based video conferencing, and work-based learning. Brian has a goal of widening access to third level education through rapidly expanding online offerings in Ireland.
Lawrie Phipps
Digital Transformation in a time of Supercomplexity
Lawrie Phipps is a Honorary Professor of Digital Leadership at Keele University, and an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Munster Technological University. Working with Jisc in the UK he’s led over 200 digital change and transformation projects in Universities in the UK, Canada and Europe. His latest publication, with Lanclos and Watermeyer, looks at the impact of Generative AI on academic behaviours.

Decolonising Higher Education – undoing or reimagining?
Dr. Melanie-Marie Haywood is an international higher education consultant with a passion for academic development, and quality in education. She specialises in curriculum development, assessment, and decoloniality in higher education provision and currently serves as the Director for Education Development at Birmingham City University (UK), where she is responsible for the support and enhancement of teaching and learning across the institution, both culturally and strategically. She keeps connected to the Caribbean through active research, writing, and capacity building for HEI’s.

Dr Yaqoub BouAynaya is Lecturer in Sociology within IADT. He works across three programs, including English & Equality Studies, English & Media Studies and EDI & Business Management.

Liza-Jo is a Professional Educator, Coach and NLP Practitioner. During 25 Years in the Education Sector, as a teacher progressing into senior leadership roles, Liza-Jo always continued to teach health and social care, economics, politics, childcare and education across all age ranges & levels of learning in Schools, Colleges and University. Liza-Jo has a passion for equality and diversity and is an advocate for those with learning differences and differing abilities.
