One of our student champions, Fatima Bibi, presented at the international RAISE seminar. Fatima’s presentation looked at the commuter behaviour of students at TUS. The presentation identified everyday problems and challenges that commuter students face. A sample size of 60 was studied over a two year period. Many issues were identified but Fatima focused on transportation.
The main findings were: transport is unreliable which can result in missing a class and the issue of trying to be on time for 9 a.m. morning lab sessions: if you are more than 15 mins late you are not allowed in. Grades can suffer because of these factors.
Fatima’s study concludes that if the class schedules were organised with the transportation needs in mind then commuter engagement could be improved. In addition Fatima identified a number of initiatives that could be implemented, more details in the slide from the presentation below.
