IWD on 8th March every year is an international day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This day is also one for action from all genders in accelerating gender parity. This day provides an opportunity to reinforce the fact that we all have a part to play in reducing bias and creating a more gender-balanced world.
Historically, this day has been celebrated for over 100 years. In 1908, unrest and activism became more commonplace among women working in industrialised settings, they demanded better pay, shorter hours and voting rights. The United Nations General Assembly celebrated this day for the first time in 1975.

Around the world and here in TUS, on all our campuses we are commemorating this day with gatherings big and small. We are raising flags delivering speeches from interesting and engaging people and creating opportunities with interesting images to contribute and comment. This will reinforce a commitment to women’s equality and a raising of awareness.
This year, the theme for IWD is #BreakThe Bias as we need to be aware of the significant effect that bias has on women’s equality – both conscious and unconscious bias. We need to be aware of it, recognise it and challenge it in all its forms.
Today’s world expects a more inclusive approach, movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp along with many gender focused days and initiatives, mean that gender remains firmly on the agenda. The world expects diversity, equity and inclusion. Its absence is noticed and its presence is celebrated. Let’s celebrate this day together at www.tus.ie and follow us on Twitter at TUS_EDI
